Challenge
Provide additional quality housing to support the growing population of the Burlington, VT area. This included designing and building HVAC and plumbing systems that provide efficient and independent control for all individual spaces.
Solution
To optimize a system solution, energy modeling was performed and cost estimates of VRF (Variable Refrigerant Flow) air source heat pumps, water source heat pumps, and one to one air source heat pumps were evaluated.
To provide maximum efficiency, flexibility and control VHV designed a water source heat pump system provided with integral energy recovery ventilators for each residential unit. A duct distribution system was provided for each individual residential unit to provide heating, cooling and exhaust. Similarly, the commercial spaces utilize heat pumps and duct distribution systems.

A piped hydronic system was designed and piped throughout the building to serve the heat pumps. 98% thermal efficient natural gas fired boilers, and an evaporative cooling tower provide heating and cooling control of the heat pump loop. Variable speed pumps were utilized to move fluid through the hydronic system. | The VHV Automation team designed and installed a BMS control system for the facility. This included programming, materials, alarm notifications, equipment scheduling and energy management routines. |

A complete plumbing system was designed and installed. This included all plumbing fixtures, water entrance, 99% thermal efficiency water heaters, booster pump system, domestic cold and hot water piping, waste and vent piping and storm drain piping. The sanitary and vent system utilized the Sovent system which helps reduce material and space requirements. | This project was fully coordinated with other trades using VHV’s in-house Virtual Design Construction. |
